Development and set-up of the target for HED

A new sample manipulation system will be designed, constructed and tested for the fast, reliable and precise transfer of samples from a reservoir into the plasma-physics target chamber. The samples will be automatically aligned with respect to the ion beam and the diagnostic laser beams. Subsequent to an experiment, the system will also transfer the remains of the sample back to the reservoir. In addition, methods will be investigated for reliably positioning diagnostic equipment (e.g. nuclear activation, film and nuclear track detectors) at the experiment and for transferring the equipment to the outside of the target chamber for detailed data analysis. GSI/FAIR have decided to modernize the HHT experimental site for carrying out preparatory FAIR-APPA experiments within the FAIR phase 0.   The new sample manipulation system will be compatible with the new HHT chamber where it will be tested and used for experiments.
