NUSTAR Week 2023 in Bucharest/Magurele

10.10.2023

After a three year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic and following the NUSTAR Week 2019 in Gif-sur-Yvette, France, the NUSTAR community had its collaboration meeting once again outside of GSI. This time, the NUSTAR Week 2023 was hosted by IFIN-HH and ELI-NP in Bucharest/Magurele, Romania, where more than 100 scientists met on-site or connected on-line to the meeting.

The plenary sessions started with a welcome address by the IFIN-HH director, Nicolae Marius Marginean, and by the State Secretary for Research (Romanian Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalisation), Tudor Prisecaru. The FAIR management, represented by Paolo Giubellino and Jörg Blaurock, reported on the latest status of FAIR, pointing out that the project is entering a new phase with the installation of accelerator components into the new buildings.

Besides status reports from NUSTAR and Super-FRS, the main focus of the meeting was on the ideas related to Early and First Science at FAIR, which were discussed in the plenary sessions as well as during coffee and lunch breaks for the local participants. In addition, Romanian groups reported on their present scientific work. This included opportunities and synergies with the ELI-NP facility, which were the subject of several talks, rounded up by a visit of the high-power laser laboratory. For further information see conference web page.

This NUSTAR meeting marks also the 20th birthday of the NUSTAR Collaboration (the first meeting of the NUSTAR Council took place October 14, 2003). With the installation of FAIR accelerator components in sight, the NUSTAR Collaboration is looking forward to the first beams from Super-FRS.

The next NUSTAR Collaboration meeting (NUSTAR Annual Meeting 2024) will take place February 26 - March 1, 2024 at GSI (see conference web page).
