The Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP is employed for high-precision mass measurements in the region of the heaviest elements. Recently, the masses of the isotopes 252-255No and 255,256Lr have been measured directly for the first time. The combination of the latest results with spectroscopic data pins down the mass values of nuclides up to 270Ds. The binding energies deduced form these masses provide essential information on the nuclear structure of superheavy elements. The results of the latest mass measurements will be discussed.

To open the door towards the direct mass measurements of superheavy elements decreasing production rates have to be faced. A cryogenic gas stopping cell will pave the way by an increase of the extraction and stopping efficiency by a factor of three or more. The status of the commissioning with results from first extraction measurements will be presented.
