Reaction studies with ion-storage rings

The Projekt "Set-up of APPA at FAIR: Reaction studies with ion-storage rings" is an important mile stone for the future FAIR research. Ion-storage rings provide the unique possibility for storing stable and radioactive ions at high energies and over long time periods.  This facilitates investigations of rare processes since the ions will typically circulate in the storage ring until a reaction happens. The present project focusses on nuclear-physics questions of astrophysical relevance. First measurements have already been carried out during the FAIR phase 0. New equipment will be added to the storage rings that will allow for the measurement of hitherto inaccessible nulcear reactions.
