Each year school finalists participate from several high-schools in the Costa Brava region to compete for the 'Felix Garcia Castaner Award'. This year's winner is Manuel Pérez Torán from northern Spain. Sponsored by the 'Rotary Club Costa Brava Centre', the prize included a trip to Germany, where various science institutions in Darmstadt, among them FAIR and GSI, were visited.

Felix Garcia Castaner initiated the prize named after him several years ago when the former director (1991 - 1997) of the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt returned to Spain. Since his death in 2005, his wife, Montserrat Portell Ferrer, organizes the trip of the prize winners to Darmstadt. Selection criteria for the prize are excellent school marks, an outstanding school project of the last year and social commitments.
