Sweden delivers CRYRING:

First storage ring for FAIR

The Manne Siegbahn Laboratory in Stockholm has delivered the first storage ring to the future accelerator facility FAIR. The so-called CRYRING has a diameter of 18 meters. In the long term it is planned to utilize this at FAIR for atomic physics research with slow antiprotons. Initially the storage ring will be set up for experiments and machine tests on the existing GSI accelerator facility. The CRYRING is Sweden’s contribution to FAIR.


The CRYRING was transported by truck from Stockholm to Darmstadt in several consignments. It is to be assembled and commissioned in the winter of 2013/14. The researchers plan to set up the CRYRING in an existing GSI experimental area which is to be modified accordingly in the coming summer. The GSI accelerator facility serves as an injector for the CRYRING. Furthermore, part of the CRYRING delivery is its own ion source. This allows for independent use, for example for experiments and testing of FAIR components for the period in which the GSI facility is not available.


Ions at very low and medium energies are allowed to collide with material samples in the ring. This allows for the observation of slow collisions of the stored ions with electrons, photons and gas atoms, which are above all interesting for experiments in atomic physics, yet also for materials research, plasma physics and nuclear physics. Comparable collisions occur, for example, in astrophysical environments and can thus be reproduced in the laboratory so as to draw conclusions about processes in space.


The technical characteristics of the CRYRING are a powerful electron cooler as well as a very good vacuum, which is attained using a number of so-called getter modules. Getters are special materials which capture gas particles and thus remove the residual gas.


Additional project partners are the Dutch Kernfysisch Versneller Institute (KVI) in Groningen and the Helmholtz Institute Jena.
