From September 6-13 the fourth edition of the International FAIR School took place in Castiglione della Pescaia, Italy. The school was jointly organised by the Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research and the FAIR Russia Research Center (FRRC) in Moscow.

The event brought young PhD students from the FAIR partner countries together and exposed them to the science of all pillars of the FAIR project. By doing so it formed new connections, started potential new collaborations and helped that the FAIR community grows together even more. As Sascha Vogel and Hans Gutbrod, co-directors of the school state: “Getting together and teaching the students today lays the foundation for tomorrow’s excellent research at FAIR”.

As in previous years, the International FAIR School has employed the very successful format of lectures given by international FAIR experts in the morning and workshop sessions in the afternoon. Here the students solved problems in teams and tackled projects given by the lecturers, who discussed the solutions together with the students in the evening. Each day was devoted to one scientific pillar of FAIR, i.e. APPA; CBM, NUSTAR and PANDA. In two more days the students learned about the accelerator complex, microelectronics and High Performance Computing.

The Fourth International FAIR School was funded largely by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) with the intention to open and widen the scope of the International FAIR School as well as to intensify the contact between German and international students. Additional funds for travel were provided by FRRC and other international partners. In total 50 students from 12 nationalities attended the school.
