In the framework of round trips by bus 212 visitors and employees of FAIR and GSI viewed the construction site following the lecture “FAIR under construction – the construction site for the accelerator facility FAIR”. After a lecture by the Director of Site and Buildings, Dr. Florian Hehenberger, the civil engineer slipped into the role of a tour guide, explaining to visitors on the round trips what was happening on the construction site and the extensive logistics on.

The series of lectures “Science for all” hosted by the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research has for many years now enjoyed great popularity among FAIR and GSI employees, as well local residents and others from the region. There was particular interest on this day as for the first time ever there was a “practical part” directly after the lecture and animated discussion: A twenty-minute bus trip around the FAIR construction site, on which the last of the total of 1,400 drilled piles are currently being put in place so as to stabilize the substructure. The bus made a total of four trips to give visitors the chance to gain an insight in to one of the world’s most unusual construction sites.
