Electronics Engineer and HDL Embedded Systems Programmer (all genders)

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

GSI has a mayor involvement in the realization of the silicon tracking stations and the related DAQ-systems for the two experiments Compressed Baryonic Matter CBM at FAIR as well as Baryonic Matter at Nuclotron BM@N at JINR in Russia.

In the context of the BMBF-funded German Russian Roadmap Project NICA-II, the department Detector Laboratory (DTL) at GSI seeks for an

who will work under the supervision and technical guidance of the GSI detector laboratory as well as the CBM-STS team and an international data acquisition development team.

The successful candidate will engage in the development of a high rate data acquisition system (DAQ) that may be employed for the nuclear physics experiment Baryonic Matter at Nuclotron (BM@N). This development activity will be embedded in the overarching DAQ development road for CBM.

The work will finally also feed into the development of quality verifying tests for the assembly of silicon strip detector modules in every one of its integration steps towards a silicon tracking system (STS). These tests are essential ingredients for successful system integration of both, the CBM-STS as well as the BM@N-STS. They need the professional supervision and continuous accompanying adaptation of processes during the coming years of STS system assembly.

The candidate will take over responsibility for these developments or partial aspects of them and carry them out in an independent and responsible way. The candidate will report and discuss his results with the international DAQ development team. Moreover, the candidate will represent his/her activity within the international collaboration and beyond.

The successful candidate:

  • must have thorough experience in the development of DAQ systems for multi-channel instrumentation of physics experiments
  • must be firm in programming of embedded systems using hardware description languages and FPGAs
  • must be firm on Python scripting
  • should be firm in the electronic readout of silicon strip sensors, in particular double sided silicon strip sensors
  • should bring interest to fully understand synchronous GBT-based detector readout and the corresponding DAQ system
  • must be fluent in spoken and written English. German and/Russian skills are of advantage
  • should impress with motivation and personality

We offer:

  • a work contract until 30.06.2025 according to TVöD standard of the public service in Germany
  • salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund), effective at GSI
  • the opportunity to learn about and participate in leading edge research on numerous questions related to latest particle detector technologies
  • joining an international research team (English as working language)

GSI supports the vocational development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.

Severely handicapped persons will be preferentially considered when equally qualified.
