Call for Applications - CAS DAAD Doctoral Scholarships

Since 2007, a cooperation agreement on the joint training and education of doctoral researchers has been in place between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and DAAD. The CAS–DAAD Joint Scholarship Program enables young scientists from China to undertake a research stay in Germany for 12 to 22 months during their doctoral degree. This is aimed exclusively at doctoral researchers from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and from CAS research institutions.

Target Group:

Up and coming young Chinese scientists from a CAS institute or the UCAS who wish to carry out part of their doctoral research in Germany. Specifically, integrated Master-PhD students and Doctoral students from China


Doctoral researchers and those undertaking a combined master’s and PhD Programme must have studied for a period of at least one year. Candidates must not have begun their doctoral degree more than three years ago. Doctoral researchers with confirmed employment once they have completed their doctorate may not apply.

Duration of the funding

12 – 22 months

What can be funded:

A research stay at a German institution of higher education or research institution, with the exception of Max-Planck or Fraunhofer institutes.

Funding type:

External funding via DAAD (no Budget needs to be planned for 2023)

Fnding includes:

  • € 1,350 per month in the first year from UCAS; € 1,200 per month in the second year from DAAD
  • Health, accident, and liability insurance
  • Travel allowances (standard DAAD rates)

Applciation Window for applications:

04 November 2022 - 04 December 2022

Internal consultation & deadline for submission to check the project, scope and candidate: 25 November 2022


 In March of the subsequent year candidates will be invited for an interview in Beijing with a selection committee consisting of experts from the CAS and the DAAD.
